Overview

Clarín (Leopoldo Enrique García Alas y Ureña). Nació en Zamora en 1852, aunque toda su vida residió en Asturias y su ascendencia es asturiana, y murió en Oviedo en 1901. Su infancia y juventud transcurrieron en Oviedo, donde estudió Bachillerato y en 1869 empezó Derecho Civil y Canónico, licenciándose en 1871. Después se fue a Madrid, para hacer el doctorado en Leyes y estudiar Filosofía y Letras. En 1878 opositó a la cátedra de Economía Política y Estadística de la Universidad de Salamanca, pero no la consiguió. En 1882 ocupa igual cátedra en la Universidad de Zaragoza y al año siguiente la de Derecho Romano de la Universidad de Oviedo. Con la reestructuración de los estudios universitarios, asume la cátedra de Instituciones de Derecho, y en 1888, de la de Derecho Natural. En ese mismo año es elegido concejal republicano por el Ayuntamiento de Oviedo. En el diario barcelonés La Publicidad, publicó un artículo dando a conocer el propósito de la Extensión Universitaria. Sus comienzos literarios fueron como crítico, en el periódico El Solfeo, en el que Leopoldo Alas estrenó, en 1875, su seudónomico de Clarín. Además de su colaboración en periódicos, cultivó el teatro, la novela su obra cumbre es La Regenta, que se publicó en 1885 y la narrativa breve. Fue un escritor maldito, hasta su aceptación en los años cincuenta del siglo XX.
